RGB and CMYK - big deal apparently!

I got my book back today:

It all looked good until I got to the pages with the big images on it...

As you can faintly see here, there is a book around the image

It is more obvious on the tortoise page:

The people at DPI said it would be okay, but I was a bit like 'No, this is for my Final Major Project it has to be perfect' Soooooooo I've got to sort my drawings out.
What the problem was I did my drawings in photoshop under RGB colour format, but the indesign file was in CMYK format.
So I've gotta sort them out and send them off again..

Front and back covers

I finished the rabbit drawing, but I still didn't really like the back page. I thought I'd leave it for a week and go crack on with my research.

Here is how it was:

I've come back to it, and I realised its the font that I don't like. I didn't think it should be the same as the inside text.

So is how my front and back cover look now:

I've now sent my book off to DPI, how exciting!

Courting page changed!

In the end I didn't really like the layout of my Courting page, so I made some changes!

DPI

I've been asking my friends if they've knew of any good printing places in Bournemouth, and quite a couple of people said about this place 'Design Print Internet'. They actually were one of the top searches on Google, so I had already looked at their website.
Today I emailed them to see if I could book an appointment, and they said I could come by this afternoon.
They showed me the different types of paper I could have my book printed on, I've chose to have it matt finish.
It's only going to cost me £20 and I'll get two copies, so I thought that was pretty good!

Now all I need to do is finish my book and send it off to them!

8th April Deadline

Today we had to had in our work so far, but hopefully it would've been finished. I have pretty much finished, but I've still got to do that back page.
Here is what I've handed in:
Easter break now, but I think I'll staying here doing more work :(

Courting title page!

As well as sorting out other bits in indesign, today I've been creating a title page for my Courting section. I've used the Frigate Bird, the Rifle bird and the Porcupine as examples of what the section contains.

I might change the layout of these eventually though, not too sure about it at the moment.

Example book page

Here is my tortoise page, see I've done it the same way the Miffy books are layed out. Text on one page, image on the other.
I'm using quite subtle colours throughout to fit in with the organic kind of style of the text.

Changing the sizes of the porcupine and salamander

When I did a test print on my book, the images of the porcupine and the salamander looked really small on the page compared to the tortoises. This is because the images are next to each other, it left a lot of space above and below them. To resolve this I've decided to move them about, so;

What was this

Is now like this

And what was like this

Is now like this

Having them like this means I can make the images a lot bigger!

Book structure!

I've decided I'm going to break up my book into sections. This will give it more flow throughout, so I've done it in chapters of 'Courting', 'Mating' and 'General Sex Facts'.
I've used questions because it'll make readers more curious about what animal the page is about. It also is a good way of learning, as readers could also try and guess before turning over to that particular page.

I also worked out what the page numbers for the book would be, 46 pages! Seems like quite a lot.. which is good!

Text for inside my book

Here is the draft I wrote up in Word for my book pages, I just need to draw over them in photoshop now..

Tortoise

The male Galápagos giant tortoise reaches sexual maturity when he’s 40 years old. After fighting with other males to win his woman, he will go on to mate with her for up to two hours.
Well they do say good things come to those who wait…

Salamander

Who needs alcohol, oysters or even a good appearance? The male mountain dusky salamander uses special glands on his chin as an aphrodisiac to attract the female. They are nicknamed ‘vampire salamanders’, as the male will bite the female’s neck to infuse her with his scent. This leaves her feeling very horny and willing to have sex. Talk about getting a “love bite”.

Porcupine

As a pulling method, the male porcupine will urinate all over his potential date to see if she’s interested in having sex. He can spray her from a distance of up to six feet, literally giving her a golden shower by soaking her from head to toe. If she’s up for it, she will allow him to mate with her. But if she doesn’t like him, she will either pull a threatening gesture or just run away.

Contents page

What animal…

1. Has strange genitalia?
2. Dances for attention?
3. Has sex, and then dies?
4. Gets laid without even noticing?
5. Bites their date?
6. Uses food to get females into bed?
7. Urinates on you if they like you?
8. Gets married?
9. Boils bunnies?
10. Is a 40 year old virgin?
11. Eats you if you sleep with them?
12. Becomes tied together?
13. Watches porn to get them horny?
14. Raises kids that don’t belong to them?
15. Builds a nest structure to gain a lover?
16. Fights for love?
17. Has incestuous sex ?
18. Attracts a mate by being attractive?
19. Makes love not war?

Drawing urine....

Is really hard... until you find the right reference photo..

My school friend never got back to me in the end about his slow mo video, and so I went on a search on google images, and of course I found a lot of porn when I typed in 'urination'.
Here is an image I found, it was pretty graphic but I've cut it down, of a guy weeing into his hand. Lovely... It helped lots when drawing my porcupine pee though!

Front page final design concept

Here is my initial design for the front cover for my book:

I've given the tapir a little speech bubble also, just to make it more amusic. I've done this in photoshop. I now need to start putting things into Indesign just so I can lay them out properly.

Miffy

I went into the library to look at different books to help me get an idea of size and layout. I went to the childrens book section and came across this Miffy book by auther Dick Bruna.

I liked the layout on the inside too, the text on one page, and the image on the other. This has insipired me to do my book a similar layout style.

Book title/front page

As I don't actually have a title for my book just yet, today I've been brainstorming different ideas.
And here are just a few:

- The Animal Sex Book
-Animals do filthy things
- How do animals do it?
-Animals have sex!
- Doing it like the do on the Discovery Channel..
- What animals do filthy sexual things?
-Animals getting sexy
- I wanna sex you up - the animal way.
- If you read this book you are a beastiality pervert
- Having sex - the animal way
-Getting sexy with animals
- Animails behaving badly
- The Joy of Animal Sex
- Animal Sex/Huma Sex - Same thing!
-Sex... This IS how they do it on the Discovery Channel
- Animals Instincts
- Sexual behaviour in animals
- Hey! Lets have sex
- It's only natural - the animal sex book
- See! The animals are doing it too!
- How animals get each other into bed
- Wanna come back to my burrow?
- Lets make love, the animal way
- Wild thing - the animal sex book.

I asked some of my friends and came up with these:

I then had a brilliant idea! I'm going to put the tapir I saw at Marwell Zoo on the front of my book, his massive penis would go perfectly!

So for the rest of the day I've been drawing this guy.. giving a cheeky wink.

Gustavo Eandi

Whilst browsing a forum for some new music to listen to I stumbled across this album cover. Illustrated by Gustavo Eandi... looks pretty similar to my work!
