Human Planet

I just watched this episode of Human Planet on BBC iPlayer at about 40 minutes in it talks about people living in deserts meeting up for a chance to have flings with each other. This is just after the rains have fallen, when there is no worries for food or water. The men have to dance and sing to impress the woman, they even dress themselves up in body paint. In these few days of the year, all promises of marriage go out the window, and everyone is free to have sex with anyone.
I thought this was quite funny, and related to my project as humans are doing a lot of things that I've read about to do with animals. Like, making themselves look colourful, dancing and singing.

There's even at the end a married couple, and the woman is platting the mans hair, and he says 'You love me, because you're platting my hair'
Which I thought was quite sweet. This is quite similar to animal grooming, like with chimps and apes.

BLAD

This morning I went and spoke to Sally Hope in Vis Com and she advised me not to make an entire book, as even for third year Vis Com students this is a lot of work.
She informed me about a thing called a BLAD which by definition means;

Blad stands for book (or, basic) layout and design. A blad is a booklet, often wire-bound, consisting of a few sample pages or chapters of a book with a proof of the front and back covers or book jacket. It serves as a preview of the book for promotional use, reviewers, and advance sales.

So my have decided to change my project. I shall now just be making a BLAD of my animal sex book and focus on it as if I was going to pitch it to a publishing company.
This means I'm going to have to look at different publishers and look at it more like a business plan.

Book Binding

I have been looking into book binding options, and I am checking up online how much different materials will be.
I have had a go at book binding before, so have some idea on what I need but I have stumbled across the company Shepherds Falkiners. They are based in London and supply all the materials I would need and seem pretty good. I'm going to be in London next weekend so I shall go in and ask for some advice, and maybe even make a purchase of materials.
I would quite like to make the book myself, as it will make it truly my own. But if it works out way too expensive then I might have to get it sent off.

Things already out there!

The BBC just love joking around with animals, here are a few programmes they've produced:

Mongrels - animal puppets, this programme is more for adults!

Creature Comforts - Aardmans classic, interviews with animals... the things they might say if they could talk.

Walk on the Wild Side - taking clips from already filmed nature programmes and putting dubbed voices over the top - genius!

Isabella Rossillini - Green Porno

This artist dresses up in animal costumes and explains how they have sex.

Books: Looking on Amazon.co.uk I haven't really found anything exactly like my book. I did stumble across this though; How Animals Have Sex by Gideon Defoe. This is quite like the idea I had in mine, but I want to make the images more funny, by putting the animals in different situations. I want it to have a nice organic kind of style to it too, and I'm going to show this through my illustrations.
